Paper Series

I have often experimented with the use of
colored paper in my intaglio prints, usually in the form of chine colle (colored paper glued and printed simultaneously). These images created in Japan use traditional Japanese papers, such as gampi and washi as an integral part of the image. They can add texture as well as color, and also can create subtle changes in contrast, softening the black-and-whites of the inked plate.

Sources of imagery include familiar objects of everyday, more often those that are man-made rather than images from nature.

In this continuing series, I am exploring the simple medium of folded and cut paper, children’s play that
can have meaning on many levels, ranging from the joy of childhood and aesthetic pleasure to paper objects as symbols that evoke adult emotions and concerns of identity, and of choices.
